William L. Buchanan, MD, DDS

Dr. William L. Buchanan was born and raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He attended Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri and was graduated in 1966 with a B.A. in Biology. He then attended Baylor University College of Dentistry and received his Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1970. Next, he completed a General Practice Residency at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago in 1971. It was in Chicago that his interest in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery began in earnest. He then spent one year as Assistant Director of Hospital Dentistry at the University of Oregon Health Science Center in Portland. He was then accepted into the Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery residency program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha which at the time was one of the only two programs in the Unites States which incorporated a Medical Degree (MD) as part of its curriculum – the other being Harvard. During his training, he completed a year on the anesthesia service and also a year in general surgery. Near the end of his residency, he spent just under a year in Erlangen, Germany, at a German Maxillofacial Surgical Hospital which emphasized training in management of extensive facial injuries and orthognathic surgery (jaw and facial surgery).

After completing his residency, he was asked to join the Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery faculty at the University Medical Center in Omaha under Dr. Leon Davis, a pioneer in the establishment of “Dual-Degree” Oral-Maxillofacial programs.

He returned to Texas to enter private practice in 1979 after earning his Board Certification in Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery in 1978. Despite being in private practice, he retained his interest in academics by actively participating in the writing of the national Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery In-training Examination given to all residents during each year of their training. He then served as board examiner for the American Board of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery for six years.

In 1994 he joined with Dr. John Jones to form Austin Surgical Arts, a private practice dedicated to following the highest standards of patient care as set by the American Association of Oral-Maxillofacial Surgeons. Austin Surgical Arts has been enhanced by the addition of Dr. H. Paul Casmedes in 1996 and later by Drs. Ann Kristovich and Mike Patton.
