Dr. Jones attended Florida State University graduating Summa Cum Laude in Biology in 1978. He then attended The University of Florida College of Dentistry receiving his D.M.D. degree and the Academy of General Dentistry Outstanding Senior Dental Student Award in 1982. Military service then followed. He joined the United States Air Force and completed a one year General Practice Residency in Dentistry at USAF Hospital Keesler before serving for 2 more years at USAF Hospital Kirtland. During this time Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery specialty training loomed in his future.

In 1985 he left the military and began a six year program at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. This program included medical school (class of 1989) as well as internships in anesthesiology and general surgery, and residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He completed this program in 1991 and accepted a one year Fellowship in Facial Cosmetic Surgery. Upon completion of his fellowship he returned to The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as a full time faculty member and assistant professor. During this time he lectured extensively, locally and nationally, as well as published several articles and book chapters.

In 1994 he moved to Austin at the invitation of Dr. William Buchanan and together they formed Austin Surgical Arts. Dr. Jones remains very active in the private practice of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is also the Chairman of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at University Medical Center Brackenridge and a member of the Central Texas Craniofacial Deformity Team.
